When wigs go wrong

Though Amanda Bynes currently has more to worry about then the quality of her wig, recently I have seen pictures of her disheveled unkempt wig, and thought to myself…why hasn’t she taken a comb to that thing? All jokes aside, living in NYC I have seen people with wigs that look for lack of a better word, wiggy. You know, when you see someone who clearly looks like they are wearing a wig. It kind of sits on top of their head instead of flowing into place. Well that is a problem and here are some tips for keeping that wig intact.

Poor Amanda, I hope everything works out for her and that someone gets her some professional help!

You should always go to a hair store and try on a few wigs to see what style and length looks good on you. Sometimes price options vary in different neighborhoods but try to find a store so you can try a few on. Once you understand what styles and lengths fit your face, go online and try to find that wig for a cheaper price, if the store price wasn’t worth it.

Remember,  you have to realize that the wig will almost always look good on the styrofoam head, but the length and shape may not look good on you. So take some time and try it on.

Beyonce is known for her lace front wigs. You notice it has a natural look, to it.

Also, opt for a full lace or lace-front wig. It gives you an opportunity to part the wig and style it as you please. Sometimes full lace wigs can be a bit pricey, but in the end it truly does make the difference in whether it looks like you are wearing a wig or not.

You also want to make sure it fits your head! Not all wigs are created the same, and some wigs don’t have a draw-string to tighten the fit, so it may be loose on your head and nothing is worse then having a wig fall off your head in the middle of the street!

If you don’t mind styling a small portion of your hair, buy a u-part wig. It allows you to part your hair and blend your hair with the wig hair, giving a natural look and more leeway for styling.  You may also buy something called a half wig, in which more of your own hair is left out, usually giving a very natural look. If you choose any of these options, be sure to get a wig that matches the color and texture of your hair so that it blends.

It may look strange but the section in the middle is where you would have a section of you hair parted and blended into the wig hair. There are also other types of wigs that have the same concept but with a side part instead of a center part.

Last but not least, try to buy wigs made of human hair. You can style and profile the wig to your liking. You can curl it or straighten it and it wont melt, it really is a good option, although quite expensive depending on what type of wig you buy.

However, you can purchase a synthetic wig (not made of human hair) and be just as happy. Just know that the style it came as, is the only style you will be able to rock. There is also the option of buying synthetic wigs that can be styled with heat (up to a certain temperature). I recommend human hair wigs, but they all are doable options.

Remember, there is no race, culture or stigma attached to wearing a wig. Some of the most beautiful women and celebrities wear wigs.  Also, if you wear a wig, don’t assume people will think you are bald or in the process of balding. Many women have long luscious locks, but like the versatily that comes with wearing a wig, and the option to style the hair without ruining your own. So give it a try!
